Five Questions with Keith Peacock

OVER THE YEARS, 2019-20 International Thespian Officer Keith Peacock has filled a variety of roles onstage and off as part of Thespian Troupe 5297 at Lee County High School in Leesburg, Georgia. “Onstage I’d say my favorite role was Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher,” Peacock said, adding that his offstage interests include designing both sets and lights.

Aside from performing, designing, and advocating for theatre education, the Thespian alum enjoys playing soccer with his brother-in-law, livestreaming his adventures as an ITO, and his “favorite of all … hanging out with my best friends.”

This fall, Peacock plans to attend Columbus State University to pursue bachelor’s degrees in both theatre and biology.

When and how did you become interested in theatre?
Oddly enough, initially I was not big on the idea of theatre. But when I was in third grade, I asked my mom to join our school’s drama club because it was the cool thing to do. Because I wanted to be in the drama club, my mom forced me to try out for the school production of Beauty and the Beast. From there, I fell in love.

What personal achievements are you proud of?
I’ve accomplished a few things this year that I’m proud of. Speaking to my congressman about the importance of arts education was a huge accomplishment for me. I think my favorite accomplishment of this year, however, has been doing what I love, which is livestreaming about being an ITO.

How did you become interested in becoming an International Thespian Officer?
When I was a freshman in high school, a group from my school qualified to be adjudicated in National Individual Events [now the International Thespian Excellence Awards] at the International Thespian Festival for their musical number “Big Ass Rock” from The Full Monty. When I got there, the ITOs of that year were onstage, and they talked about all the things they accomplished in the year. I told myself I wanted to make as much of a difference as they did.

What do you think makes a good leader?
Personally, I feel adaptability is what makes the best leaders. Being able to make the best of any situation is an invaluable skill.

What advice would you share with other Thespians?
Hug your troupe members as tight as you can because no matter what, they are your family.
