AS A NATIONAL STUDENT LEADER committed to vocal, dance, and acting training, Nic Fallacaro is at home in the spotlight of Thespian Troupe 830 at Pennsbury High School. But what motivates him most is just doing what he loves, whether performing onstage, building sets, or even hitting the basketball court with friends. “We are not great at the game,” he admits, “but we have a lot of fun.”
Fallacaro became interested in becoming a Thespian officer after attending an advocacy workshop facilitated by former ITO Chair and Pennsylvania STO Grace Alt at a Pennsylvania State Thespian Conference. “After her workshop, I realized I had a passion for theatre advocacy and a desire to step up as a student leader,” said Fallacaro, who became a Pennsylvania STO the following year.
Fallacaro’s integrity and perseverance more recently earned him the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts. “My project involved a complete renovation of our school’s costume room. We built new racks, shelving, and put forth a new system of organization. This project was important to me because I was able to combine my love for Scouting with my passion for theatre.”
When and how did you first become interested in theatre?
I first became interested in theatre in the fifth grade. My brother was playing Motel in our high school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, and the director wanted a few younger kids to be involved. My brother convinced me to join theatre and ever since that first experience, I was hooked and kept pursuing it.
What are some of the theatre roles you have filled onstage, backstage, or offstage?
I have participated in many aspects of theatre. The one I am most involved in is performing onstage. I currently take tap, ballet, and jazz. I also take voice lessons every week, and I am constantly involved in productions at my school. Most of the backstage work I have done consisted of set building. One of my favorite offstage experiences was getting to be the producer for my school’s (stage) version of SNL, which we call Thursday Night Live. This allowed me to combine my passions of leadership, writing, directing, and producing.
What do you think makes a good leader?
I think a good leader is someone able to find the best in others and effectively collaborate with them. Good leaders get things done; great leaders utilize their team properly to get it done well. I think it is important to be organized, adaptable, timely, and passionate — great leaders are driven by a genuine passion for what they do.
What are your next plans?
My plan is to go to college and get a bachelor’s degree in business. I also plan to stay involved in theatre throughout college and beyond. I know the skills I’ve learned from theatre have prepared me to be successful no matter what I do in the future.
What advice would you share with other Thespians?
My advice for Thespians is to always remember to have fun in everything you do. You never know how important something is to you until it’s gone. Looking back at my high school career, I have so many great memories, and I wish I could go back and relive them. If you have fun in everything you do, you’ll be happy!
