Mark Your Calendar for TIOS Month

AS AN ACTIVE THESPIAN, you know the value of school theatre. But did you know that, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics, only 28% of public high schools in high poverty areas offer theatre instruction — despite evidence that at-risk students involved in the arts are more likely to stay in school, get better grades, and go to college?

In March, EdTA, ETF, and ITS join with the American Alliance for Theatre & Education to promote Theatre in Our Schools Month. The goal of TIOS Month is to raise public awareness of the impact of theatre education and draw attention to the need for more access to quality theatre programs for all students. This is an opportunity for you and your troupe to share personal impact stories about educational theatre not only within your school but also with leaders, influencers, policymakers, and community members.

Week 1: March 1-7
Thespian Spirit Week
Show your Thespian pride to raise awareness about TIOS in your school and beyond. Join the fun on Instagram with the Thespian Spirit Week photo challenge hosted by your International Thespian Officers. Follow @thespiansociety for details.

Week 2: March 8-14
Saturate Your School Week
Use announcements, displays, school media, and presentations to the student body and faculty to share your theatre education impact stories.

Week 3: March 15-21
Cover Your Community Week
Get creative with displays and presentations in libraries, public spaces, stores, and community websites/blogs/social media pages about your TIOS activities.

Week 4: March 22-28
Equip Elected Officials Week
Get in touch with school boards and other elected officials with TIOS presentations, handouts, emails, and other communications.
