New summer intensive for high school students prepping for performance in college and beyond!

High school students interested in preparing for college training and professional life as an actor have a new destination. Long considered a premiere training program for gap year, undergraduate, and professional students, the National Theater Institute (NTI), a program of the two-time Tony Award-winning Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, will welcome high school students for the first time this summer (2023) in its inaugural Emerging Artists Intensive.

Scheduled for August 6-13, 2023, NTI’s Emerging Artists Intensive is designed to give young artists ages 15-19 a taste of conservatory-style education similar to an undergraduate training program. Students will also receive help preparing for professional and educational auditions while gaining insight into life as a professional artist.

Participants will also have opportunities to interact with other artists on campus for the O’Neill’s Cabaret & Performance Conference, which includes their peers participating in the prestigious Junior Cabaret Fellows program for high school-age singers.

Tuition for the Emerging Artists Intensive program is $2,800, which includes room, board, and all programming. Travel to and from Waterford, CT, must be provided by the student.

Interested students should apply for the program by June 1. Applicants must upload a resume and headshot as well as answer a few brief questions regarding their interest and provide one reference. Applications are available at theoneill.submittable.com.

The Emerging Artists Intensive joins a long list of world-class NTI programs, including the National Theater Institute semester, National Music Theater Institute semester, Advanced Directing semester, Advanced Playwriting semester, and the Theatermakers Summer Intensive. Each of this programs earns college credit through Connecticut College. NTI also partners with the UK’s Rose Bruford College to offer an international MA/MFA program.

Since its founding in 1970, NTI has provided hundreds of students a springboard to the professional world. Alumni of NTI’s programs include John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch, Jennifer Garner, Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Etai Benson, Kimberly Marable, Jiehae Park, Diana Oh, Rebecca Taichman, Susan V. Booth, Maria Manuela Goyanes, and more.

After two years of virtual precollege programming, Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) is pleased to announce that its Musical Theatre Intensive for precollege students is back on campus in New York City for Summer 2022 with two sessions: Session I from June 26 to July 9, and Session II from July 10 to July 23. MMC’s precollege Musical Theatre Intensives provide each student with individualized coaching, as well as a supportive learning community of students and theatre professionals. The two-week program gives students the tools to analyze a script and song, make informed acting choices, use music to propel a story, and understand the techniques required to create a digital pre-screen. Based on current industry standards for both college auditions and the professional world in New York City, this summer’s instruction includes acting and vocal coaching, preparation for college auditions, daily dance, Broadway guest seminars, and Broadway shows.

What are previous students of the precollege program saying?

“The summer musical theatre intensive program at Marymount was the highlight of my summer. I made many new friends from all over the world who’ve continued to help me through the audition season. Christine Riley and Emily Clark provided us with valuable training, emphasizing the importance of telling a story through song and dance. This program solidified my passion for theatre and helped tremendously when it came to preparing audition materials. I loved every minute of it.”

MMC’s summer intensive truly changed my life. I learned so much from multiple professors during my time there and grew immensely as an actress. I experienced a taste of a true BFA Musical Theatre curriculum, and it prepared me for all my college auditions this year. MMC is a college, but also a family.”

Where better to study musical theatre than the home of Broadway?

The precollege intensives are led by Marymount Manhattan’s Theatre Arts Department, which offers college students a rigorous program, combining training in acting, singing, and dancing with a robust liberal arts education. The curriculum prepares students for a successful professional career in the theatre industry while also providing the education needed to be a global citizen and creative changemaker. The Theatre Arts Department offers BFA degrees in Acting, Musical Theatre, Theatre Design and Technology, and Stage and Production Management. It also offers a BA Theatre Arts degree with concentrations in Directing, Writing for the Stage, Theatre and New Media, and Theatre History and Performance Texts.  ♦

Professor Christine Riley, director of the precollege intensives, is an assistant professor of Theatre Arts at MMC and a Music Director, Vocal Coach, and Arranger in New York City.  Some recent credits include My Vaudeville Man (The York Theatre), Thoroughly Modern Millie (National tour), Addy and Uno (The Kirk), Gemini the Musical (The Acorn), The Quiet Clock (Stage 72), Seesaw (The Connelly Theatre), and Count to Ten (Theatre at St. Clements).
